The International Academy Amman (IAA) opened its doors as a non-profit private institution in 2004, with its main goal to educate the youth of Jordan. IAA has accomplished much in its 15 years and is recognised for being one of the best schools in Jordan, as well as internationally. In December 2012, IAA earned joint accreditation from the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).
IAA currently enrolls 1150 students ranging from Pre-K1, at age 3, all the way to the International Baccalaureate Diploma at age 18. The school celebrated its first graduating cohorts in 2011 and since then university acceptance letters have poured in from some of the most prestigious universities in the world.
IAA, an independent co-educational day school, offers an international education within a Jordanian setting that fosters an atmosphere of pride, identity, faith and inter- cultural empathy. The Whole School Curriculum Coordinator, who reports to the Director, is a school wide academic coordinator and is accountable for the following:
- Coordination of effective teaching and learning across the school and assuring that academic programs support school guiding statements
- Maintenance of school wide written curriculum, policies and accreditation standards
- School wide staff development
All staff are expected to demonstrate professionalism by following the guidelines in the IAA Code of Conduct, which is signed annually by each staff member, the Policy manual, and the employment contract. The standards in these documents include but are not limited to:
- Upholding the professional standards of IAA in work and in community relationships.
- Observing confidentiality regarding all matters relating to employment with the IAA both within the school, as appropriate, and outside of the school
- Upholding all IAA policies and procedures
- Publicly supporting the school and neither organising nor participating in any activities that could bring the reputation of IAA into disrepute
- Communicating effectively and appropriately with the school community, both orally and in writing.
- Responding to communications in a timely manner
- Maintaining open and consistent channels of communication with parents regarding student progress
- Meeting deadlines and keeping records
- Participating in school events such as parent conferences and professional training that may occur outside of normally contracted working hours
- To review and maintain school-wide written curriculum standards, benchmarks and outcomes that are consistent with the School’s Statement of Vision, Mission and Goals, and clearly understood by the faculty and parents.
- To take primary responsibility for knowing and meeting the standards of the schools accrediting agencies, including but not limited to CIS, NEASC and IB:
- To keep current with accreditation/authorisation requirements and file reports as required
- To maintain cordial relationships with representatives of these agencies
- To coordinate accreditation/authorisation visits
- To ensure that all departments of the school are compliant with accreditation requirements
- To ensure that all departments of the school maintain records demonstrate compliance with agency requirements
- To coordinate accreditation self-study committees across the school making appropriate use of staff and time available
- To ensure that accreditation reports are written in a consistent style in keeping with agency guidelines that accurately and appropriately describe the school and its programs
- To work closely with school principals and coordinators while preparing for academic program (re) authorization reports.
- To assist in refining the school-wide standards and benchmarks to ensure a clear articulation both vertically and horizontally
- To review and establish appropriate and consistent written accountability procedures that assesses student attainment of learner outcomes consistent with the approved curriculum.
- To continually monitor the effective delivery of each subject.
- To monitor assessment practices so that they reflect the practices of the IB Programs and are aligned with IAA’s Assessment for learning document.
- To publicize and administer a school-wide staff development program that will attract large numbers of participants who seek improved skills and strategies for effective classroom instruction.
- To write and distribute high quality documents that provide faculty and parents important information about the school’s curriculum and instructional program.
- To monitor the unit planning for each course so that the standards and benchmarks are being taught.
- To establish a communications network that will provide a consistent flow of salient information to teachers regarding curriculum and instruction trends that are current and supported by research.
- To assist in developing classroom teaching strategies that allow for the effective application of education research.
- To create and monitor a five-year curriculum review cycle.
- To monitor and analyze the school-wide standardized testing results and use generated data to inform curriculum, teaching, and learning.
- To visit classrooms regularly to view close-hand the implementation of curriculum and the use of appropriate instructional strategies.
- To liaise and support Principals Program Coordinators and HODs in selection of curricular materials and ensure that they support school policies and guiding statements.
- To work closely with principals, department chairs, and individual teachers on strategies and planning designed to integrate curriculum and instruction.
- To liaise between the academic and finance/business departments to ensure that the school’s curricular materials are effectively managed and used.
- To approve the purchase of books and all other curriculum supplies based on need and that purchased materials are effectively used within the school.
- To evaluate proposed changes to curriculum, including report cards and assessments, and to make recommendations to the Director.
- To keep Director updated on all curriculum issues.
- To represent the school in the Director’s absence as needed.
- To perform other tasks and responsibilities as might be assigned by the Director.
- To actively support a consistent approach to implementing the School Guiding Statements
- To implement one’s professional duty of care by following school policies and procedures regarding student behaviour and discipline at all times, including classes, assigned duties, at break times and any other interactions with IAA students
- To understand that student safety is at all times paramount
- To understand and practice vigilant student safeguarding and duty of care
- Plan and implement strategies that encourage student self-discipline, reinforce appropriate behaviour and manage disruptive behaviour
- To celebrate children’s achievements both in and out of school
- To respond sensitively when dealing with children, ensuring that any concern they bring will be dealt with professionally and promptly
Minimum Academic and Professional Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction or related field from a recognized institution with course work emphasis for both teaching and curriculum development
- Certification in teaching from a recognised institution
- Documented successful classroom teaching experience and proven skills in leadership, group facilitation, organization, writing, listening and communications
- Police clearance to work with children and in schools
- Strong communication skills in English
- Excellent interpersonal skills in interacting with students, parents and staff
- Ability to supervise students in non-classroom settings
- Ability to work independently and within a team
- Experience in an internationally accredited school or national/state school in an English-speaking country
