Keynote Speaker

Dr Ulcca Joshi Hansen

Headshot of Dr Ulcca Joshi Hansen

Dr Hansen is a cultural futurist and author whose work explores what it means to be fully human during periods of rapid social and technological change. Her award-winning book The Future of Smart challenges the assumptions underlying modern institutions including education. She is at work on The Edge of Inside, which examines how we navigate identity, belonging, and transformation when old structures no longer hold.

Dr Hansen brings a distinct vantage point to these questions. A first-generation American who began school as an English-language learner, she spent her formative years across four continents—experiencing firsthand how different cultures answer fundamental questions about self, family, and social order. This "Third Culture Kid" background shapes her ability to see across ideological divides and name patterns that remain invisible from inside any single system. Her 25-year career has spanned the public, non-profit and philanthropic sectors, working with leaders and practitioners to build spaces inside of which we can unlock the unique potential of individuals regardless of their background, circumstances, cognitive or physical differences.

She speaks to audiences navigating uncertainty—from international platforms like COP26 and TEDx stages to schools, organizations, and communities grappling with polarization and the implications of artificial intelligence. Her work has been featured in national outlets including NPR and The Washington Post. She holds a doctorate from Oxford University in philosophy, neuroscience, and human development, and a law degree from Harvard Law School. Her public service has been recognized through the Truman, Marshall, and Soros Fellowships.
