CEO of McMillan Education International, America's oldest educational consultancy, Don has been invited to speak about global university admissions at educational conferences and international schools on four continents, bringing to his presentations the same commitment to students that he brought to his years teaching and leading in independent schools. He is frequently quoted in news outlets, including The Times of London, The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, and The New York Times. Don has overseen McMillan Education students from over 65 countries who have matriculated to over 400 universities throughout the US, Canada, UK, and Europe.
Having lived and studied extensively in France, Don currently splits his time between the firm's Boston office and his home office in southern France, where his wife and co-CEO Dr. Sarah McMillan enjoy frequenting local cafés that look out at the stunning ruins of the ancient Roman capital of Nîmes. Don taught French I through Advanced Placement for 25 years at three independent schools, frequently leading students to France and Québec, and hosting French students at his American prep schools. He completed his master’s degree in French literature at Université Paris X Nanterre and Middlebury College’s Paris campus, entitling his master’s thesis on Albert Camus and the French Résistance La lutte camusienne pendant la deuxième guerre mondiale.
In addition to his research and writing in French, Don holds an MFA in Creative Writing and has published extensively in English, including award-winning short stories, and a range of newspaper and magazine articles. At independent schools in the States he also taught writing and AP English, served as head coach of varsity American football, ice hockey, and tennis teams, ran dormitories with Sarah, and filled roles as Academic Dean, English Department Chair, Learning Differences Facilitator, and Director of University Counseling. He also has been asked to serve on executive boards at several national school and educational consulting associations.
Don and Sarah enjoy visiting Italy to visit their older son, Noah, and his wife Molly, who is a chef, as well as Portland, Maine, to visit his younger son, Cameron, and his wife Mary.
