Inclusion Via Diversity, Equity & Anti-Racism Deep Dive November Workshop

Date: 18 November 2023
Time: 08:30–18:00 Central European Time (CET)
Location: Convention Center Dublin, Dublin, Ireland

University guidance and admission practices: Understanding bias
and cultivating inclusion

How can bias impact students as they apply for university? We created this workshop to help university guidance and career counsellors at schools and recruitment representatives in universities learn together how to cultivate inclusion and reduce bias in the application and admissions process. Guided by specialists, you will have the opportunity to share your practices with your peers and consider additional ways to address bias in university guidance, recruitment, selection, and admission processes.

This opportunity is specifically for university guidance and careers counsellors in CIS member schools, and admissions and recruitment representatives in CIS member universities.

This event is part of our workshop series for inclusion via diversity, equity, & anti-racism (I-DEA). For convenience, we’re offering this workshop directly following this year’s Global Forum in International Admission & Guidance in Dublin. Where the Forum is a peer-led experience, the CIS I-DEA Workshop series invites expert coaches to help us address topics that require specialist expertise.

School counsellors will learn to:
  • Learn how to reflect on your own practices through the lens of inclusion via diversity, equity, and anti-racism (I-DEA)
  • Explore inclusive practices to help students from historically marginalised groups prepare for university, with a particular focus on LGBTQ+ students, students with additional mental or physical health or educational needs, and students of colour
  • Develop a critical awareness and understanding of how bias impacts university guidance counselling support at both an individual and institutional level
  • Build skills related to reducing bias in the writing of recommendation letters
  • Develop an understanding of ways to take action and embed I-DEA values in your school transition context: strategies, approaches, and tools
Recruitment & admissions representatives will learn to:
  • Develop a critical awareness and understanding of different forms of bias in the recruitment, selection, and admissions processes at an individual and institutional level
  • Build skills related to evaluating and reducing bias in the ways you recruit and select international students, including how you structure open days, visits, and tours, develop content for marketing materials, and the application reading and selection process
  • Acquire strategies for supporting students from historically marginalised groups better, with a particular focus on LGBTQ+ students, students with additional mental or physical health or educational needs, and students of colour
  • Develop an understanding of ways to take action and embed I-DEA values in your wider university admission context: strategies, approaches, and tools
