CIS-AISA INSTITUTE ON INTERNATIONAL ADMISSION & GUIDANCE

Date: 6–7 April 2018
Location: International School of Kenya, Nairobi City, Kenya

The second CIS-AISA Regional Institute on International Admission and Guidance in Africa was held at the International School of Kenya in Nairobi. CIS and the Association of International Schools in Africa (AISA) worked collaboratively on a programme which brought together university guidance counsellors from across Africa and universities from around the world for professional development, sharing, and networking. Counsellors from 11 African nations—Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe—attended the programme, as well as representatives from 45 universities in 9 countries.

Participants were inspired by the words of keynote speaker Eddy Gicheru Oketch, a Kenyan activist and founder of Ongoza, an organization committed to bringing an end to civil violence by enabling young people to become economically independent and champions of peace in their local communities. Eddy’s reflections on the opportunities afforded to him by his own international education and question of “why do we educate” left the participants inspired and engaged in thought-provoking dialogue.

Universities and students interacting at the 2018 CIS-AISA studen fair

A university fair was held during the institute and attracted more than 100 students from over a dozen schools in the Nairobi area and beyond. Universities were also able to cultivate relationships with the schools in attendance and to raise their profile amongst schools in the region.

University representatives left the event with increased knowledge of trends and challenges facing students in Africa, recruitment ideas, and stronger knowledge of the plethora of African credentials. School counsellors in attendance also had the opportunity to showcase their schools for the university representatives at the school fair. A special thank you to the International School of Kenya for hosting us on their beautiful campus!
