Counsellor (Male)

effective August 2019

Essential Duties 

The Counsellor:

  • Assists students, individually or in groups in developing academic, career, and personal/social skills, goals, and plans in collaboration with teachers and parents
  • Collaborates with parents and teachers under the umbrella of the Optimal Learning Center in administration, interpretation, utilization, and communication of student assessment data
  • Implements an effective referral and follow up process for students with identified concerns and needs and informs staff when necessary and appropriate of conditions effecting student performance
  • Monitors student academic performance, behaviour and attendance and assists with appropriate interventions and keeps accurate and up-to-date records
  • Uses assessment procedures for determining and structuring individual and group counselling services
  • Conducts new student interviews and assists with student's adjustment to entering and leaving school
  • Attends extraordinary meetings, when necessary, as determined by the Principal or Superintendent
  • Assists in the presentation, production and distribution of school handbooks and other related literature. Contributes periodically and when appropriate to the school newsletter
  • Performs such other duties as may be assigned by the Principals or Superintendent from time to time
  • Coordinates selection/evaluation of resources to meet the needs of the students and staff.

College/University Guidance:

  • Maintains records of students' progress towards graduation through credit checks
  • Informs parents and students of progress towards graduation by annual credit check letter
  • Assists in the selection of appropriate academic courses (e.g. electives)
  • Prepares college/university guidebook
  • Schedules, announces, and hosts all college and university representative visits to the school
  • Coordinates visit to the College Fairs Acts as advocate for students in the college/university admissions process
  • Hosts college/university application workshop for students and their parents
  • Updates college and university catalogues and prospectuses
  • Conducts Group Guidance regarding the college/university application process, regarding, essay writing, college admissions tests, extra curricular activities and other requirements
  • Distributes other college/university related information such as financial Aid, Scholarships, and Summer Study Programme
  • Schedules individual meetings with students and parents regarding college/university planning
  • Orders and administers PSAT test for grades 10 and 11 students in October of each year
  • Registers students for IELTS, SAT I/II and TOEFL
  • Provides appropriate school documents for college/university applications such as transcripts
  • Writes letters of recommendation to accompany college/university applications.

Administrative Duties:

  • Attends and contributes to (when appropriate) to Principals Meetings
  • Establishes and maintains collegial relationships with other school counsellors in the area
  • Supervises the Student Council
  • Continues to learn and grow as a professional by participating in workshops and conferences
  • Contributes to on-going changes in policies that serve the Advanced Learning Schools community
  • Conducts workshops for students, parents and faculty regarding issues of interest and/or need
  • Participates in a variety of school presentations.
