Discovering a Spirit of Service
Speaker: Roderick D Fraser
Organisation: Round Square
With a network of international schools in 40 countries on five continents, Round Square provides a catalyst and framework for more than 25,000 students to engage in service activities across the globe each year.
Service Learning in Round Square is all about forging mutually beneficial partnerships where learning is two-way and impacts are sustainable. The approach is to extend the learning experience not just for the students that participate in the service projects, but for all pupils throughout the school. In the Round Square context, service learning is a vehicle for the discovery of skills, attitudes and values, but also provides an outcome as pupils develop a lifelong “spirit of service”, learning that true citizenship and leadership is about being of service to others.
Developed and launched in 2015, Round Square’s Discovery Framework is currently in a pilot phase with schools across the network carrying out action research to shape its continuing evolution and development. During this session, Round Square’s Chairman will share some of the different approaches and outcomes that have been taken to embed and build on the Discovery Framework with a particular focus on infusing a spirit of Service through both curriculum and co-curricular activities.
